Kayak Launch for Dock: Launching Kayaks and Water Toys

The boat is at anchor and the toys come out one by one: two paddle boards, a kayak, a sea scooter, and a jet ski that has been tied alongside all morning. Without a dock, every launch is a balancing act off the swim platform. With one, the toys line up on a stable deck, people climb on and off at water level, and nothing drifts away. A kayak launch for a dock or a boat works the same way: a low, steady place between you and the water.

In short: a low inflatable dock (about 6 to 8 in high) makes launching kayaks, SUPs and small toys easier, at a lake house or behind a boat. Jet skis need a dock sold for PWC use, and Seabobs and e-foils have their own docks from yacht makers. At a fixed shoreline dock, rigid launch units hold the kayak for you. Keep toys clear of swimmers and engines.

Kayak launch for a dock: inflatable or rigid

At home, if you already have a fixed or floating dock, a rigid launch unit clips on. EZ Dock’s EZ Launch couples to an existing dock; YAKport mounts to floating docks with hinges or to fixed docks with pole connectors, and takes craft 34 in wide and under. Away from home, or if you have no dock, an inflatable dock anchored near shore or tied off the boat does the job and packs away. Our kayak launch docks page compares both in detail.

A floating kayak launch behind a boat

Behind a boat, the dock becomes the toy base. Inflate it on deck or at the stern with the motor off, as RAVE’s manual describes for its dock, put it in the water, and set it where swimmers can’t drift into a propeller. Island Hopper’s 10 x 6 ft Yacht Dock is narrow enough to launch from the stern. Keep paddles, leashes and pumps in one bag, and tie each toy to its own point so a gust doesn’t take two at once.

Keeping water toys at anchor

Toys left in the water all afternoon need their own anchoring. A sand bag anchor or a screw-in shallow-water anchor holds a jet ski or kayak on a sandbar; a dock with a U-bay holds a jet ski next to you. On yachts, FunAir says its Toy Island holds up to 4 jet skis or dinghies, or 2 Seabobs with guests. These are quote items; see yacht docks.

Safety while launching

  • Life jackets. The U.S. Coast Guard treats a paddle board used outside a swimming or surfing area as a vessel, which brings life jacket rules; kayaks and canoes are vessels too.
  • Engines off. Keep toys and swimmers at least 20 ft from boats running an engine or generator, as the CDC advises.
  • PWC rules. States set their own; Virginia, for one, bans PWC operation between sunset and sunrise and requires the engine cut-off lanyard.

A launch routine at anchor

  1. Anchor the boat and shut down engines before any toy goes in.
  2. Launch the dock first, then tie or clip each toy to its own point.
  3. Put paddlers in from the dock edge, one at a time, life jackets on.
  4. Keep the jet ski on the far side from swimmers, with its lanyard off when parked.
  5. Recover toys in reverse order and count them before you weigh anchor.

Most of this is simple discipline, and it keeps a crowded stern calm. For sea scooters and Seabobs, check the toy maker’s own rules on depth and supervision as well.

Launching questions

What is the easiest way to launch a kayak from a dock?

From a low floating deck: sit on the edge beside the cockpit, put your feet in, and lower yourself in. A rigid launch unit with rails makes it easier still at a home dock.

Can I launch a jet ski from an inflatable dock?

Only from one sold for PWC use. Ask the seller for the weight it is built for; many inflatable PWC listings don’t publish one.

What is a Seabob dock?

A small dock with a cradle for a Seabob or underwater scooter, so it rests out of the water between rides. Jobe’s Infinity Dock and NautiBuoy’s C-Dock are two examples.

Can a paddle board go on a kayak launch?

Some rigid launches take SUPs within a width limit; YAKport’s is 34 in. An inflatable dock works for any board.
