Inflatable Swim Docks: Swimming and Lounging on the Water

Mid-July, three in the afternoon. The kids have been swimming out to the dock and jumping off it for two hours straight, and the grown-ups are stretched out on the far edge with their feet in the water. Nobody wants to go in. An inflatable swim dock is the simplest way to give a lake house or a boat at anchor that kind of afternoon, and the details below keep it a good one.

Swimmer approaching an inflatable swim dock where a friend sits on the edge

In short: a swim and lounging dock is a firm drop-stitch dock anchored where the water is deep enough, often 4 ft or more by the maker’s rules and some distance from shore. Count people against the maker’s rating, anchor every point it provides, jump feet first, and clear the dock when wind or thunder arrives. No consumer dock maker we checked publishes a wind limit.

Where to put an inflatable swim dock

Depth and distance come first. RAVE asks for at least 4 ft of water under its Aqua Dock. Aquaglide asks for 4 ft and at least 10 ft from shore for its Docking Station. Before you set the anchors, walk or swim the spot: look for rocks, stumps, weed beds and drop-offs, and keep clear of boat traffic and the path to any ramp. Choose a spot sheltered from the wind if you can; RAVE’s manual asks for one.

How many people a swim dock holds

DockSizeMaker’s rating
RAVE Aqua Dock 1010 x 10 ft1,800 lb; 10 adults or 14 children; 14 users maximum
Aquaglide Docking Station14 ft 9 in x 10 ft 5 in600 lb; 3 adults and 3 children
WOW drop-stitch dock with mesh seating8 x 10 ft1,600 lb
BOTE Inflatable Dock 7 Classic7 x 7 ft1,050 lb

A pound figure is not a people count. People bunch up on one edge to jump, and a dock rated by load may not say how many can stand at the edge at once. Where a maker gives both, follow the lower one.

Lounging docks: sun, shade and seating

For lounging, a bigger, flatter deck is the main feature, and a few docks add seating. WOW’s 8 x 10 ft drop-stitch dock, for example, is sold with built-in mesh seating. At anchor, an Island Hopper 10 x 6 ft dock off the stern does the same job for boaters. Bring water and shade; a dock in the middle of a lake has none.

Swim dock rules from the makers

  • Feet first, no diving. RAVE’s manual says never dive head first and no flips or somersaults.
  • Watch the children. RAVE asks for constant adult supervision of children on its dock.
  • Life jackets. RAVE says to wear a USCG Type III / Level 70N life jacket on its dock. The Coast Guard notes most boating drownings happen on nice days.
  • Daylight and weather. RAVE says not to use it after sunset or before dawn, or in high winds, waves, currents, storms or lightning. The National Weather Service’s rule is “When thunder roars, go indoors.”
  • Never swim under it, and know where the anchor lines run.

Overnight and all-season swim docks

Leaving the dock out changes the rules. Minnesota’s 2026 boating guide says swimming rafts not attached to shore need a county sheriff’s permit to stay out between sunset and sunrise, with lights or reflectors. RAVE’s manual says to keep its dock at full pressure on the water, which discourages muskrats, or take it out at night, and to secure it against use when nobody is watching. Check your own state and lake rules.

More: all dock uses, floating docks for lakes and ponds, launching kayaks and water toys, homeowners and lake houses and best inflatable docks. Want a soft lounge rather than a dock? InflatablePlatforms covers floating lounges.

Before the first swim of the season

  1. Unroll the dock and inspect seams, valves and D-rings for damage from storage.
  2. Inflate to the maker’s pressure and leave it a few hours to check it holds.
  3. Check depth and the bottom where it will sit, which can change from year to year.
  4. Set new or inspected anchor lines, and check them after the first windy day.
  5. Go over the house rules with the family: feet first, life jackets for kids, off when thunder rolls.

One more thing about lounging: people move. A group that spreads out across the deck at noon ends up crowded on one edge to watch a jump or a passing boat. That is why the maker’s people limit matters even when the pound figure looks generous, and why the anchors need to hold a dock that is being pushed and tipped all afternoon. If the deck starts to tilt or dip at one edge, spread out or get some people off.

Swim dock questions

How far from shore should a swim dock be?

Far enough to reach the maker’s minimum depth. Aquaglide asks for at least 10 ft from shore and 4 ft of water for its Docking Station.

Can kids jump off an inflatable dock?

Feet first, in deep enough water, with an adult watching. RAVE’s manual rules out diving head first, flips and somersaults.

Is a swim dock better than a floating mat?

A drop-stitch dock is firm enough to sit and stand on; a foam mat flexes and is made for play. Mat makers also set their own depths; Aqua Lily Pad says never to use its mats in water under 6 ft deep.

How much anchor weight does a swim dock need?

What the maker says: RAVE suggests 150 to 200 lb depending on the lake and bottom; Aquaglide asks for at least 1,100 lb for its Docking Station. See Setup & care.
