Marina rental station on a floating dock

Floating Docks for Marinas, Rentals and Charter Operators

Seven in the morning at a busy marina: the fuel dock is opening, a rental fleet of jet skis is being checked over, and a charter skipper is loading coolers for a day trip. Every one of those businesses depends on docks, and every one has to answer to insurers, regulators and customers. This page is for marina operators, rental businesses and charter operators weighing floating marina docks, inflatable docks for temporary use, and docks carried aboard.

In short: permanent marina docks are rigid engineered systems, not inflatables. Inflatable docks fit temporary and seasonal jobs: event pontoons, a rental base on a beach, or a dock carried on a charter yacht. For any business use, get the commercial warranty and rated loads in writing, ask your insurer and authority first, and remember that public passenger boarding needs certified equipment.

Floating marina docks: where inflatables fit

A marina’s main piers and slips are usually built from engineered rigid systems (polyethylene, foam-filled floats, concrete) for years of daily use, and the event pontoon hire firms we found also use rigid modular systems. Inflatables come in for temporary or seasonal jobs. Northern Diver markets its FloatDeck, an 8 cm drop-stitch deck from 1 to 10 m that links lengthways or sideways, to commercial users and as a temporary pontoon. Airquee builds custom marine inflatables for regattas and boat shows. Island Hopper sells its 10 x 3 ft Mini Mate to sit beside a boat in a marina slip, a consumer product rather than marina infrastructure.

Any temporary pontoon that the public will walk on raises the passenger question below. For layouts and rigid kits, see modular docks; for walkways, floating walkways.

Rental businesses

Jet ski, kayak and paddle-board rentals use docks as a launch and return base. That is daily commercial use by customers of every skill level, so ask about the warranty first: Aquaglide, for example, gives its Half Deck 3 years for residential use and 1 year for light commercial use. Use only docks sold for the craft you rent; for jet skis, that means a purpose-built PWC dock or drive-on port. State PWC rules apply to your customers too; Virginia, for one, bans PWC operation between sunset and sunrise and requires life jackets and the engine cut-off lanyard. See jet ski docks and launching kayaks and water toys.

Charter operators

Inflatable jet ski docks are used on charter yachts; a charter-industry article describes a standard FreeStyle dock of 5.4 x 3 m for two jet skis. Yacht docks from Jobe, Yachtbeach, NautiBuoy, Henshaw, FunAir and FreeStyle are covered on yacht docks. For a charter fleet, ask each maker how charter use affects the warranty, what crew training they provide, and what conditions the dock is designed for; no maker we checked publishes a wind or wave limit.

Passenger boarding needs certification

Boarding paying passengers from a floating structure is regulated. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, for example, requires pontoons used as temporary passenger landing platforms to be certified by a classification society. We found no consumer inflatable dock rated for passenger landing, and no published crowd-load ratings or hire rates for inflatable landing stages. Water taxis, tour boats and event landings should start with the marine authority, not with a product listing.

Questions to ask a supplier

  1. Rated loads per section and per bay, and how they are defined (people, static load or craft weight).
  2. Warranty for commercial, rental or charter use, in writing.
  3. Design conditions: wind, waves, current and boat wake.
  4. Anchoring and installation: what is included. One dock dealer we checked lists its price without installation, anchoring equipment or shipping.
  5. Certification or documents for authorities and insurers.
  6. Repair turnaround and spare parts in season.

Insurance and permit questions

  • Does your liability policy cover customers on the dock, and does it require specific equipment, signage or staffing?
  • Does a temporary pontoon for an event need its own cover or approval?
  • In the US, does the structure need a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit for navigable waters, and what do the state and local harbor authority require?

Seasonal and event docks: a planning list

  1. Define the job and the dates: a regatta weekend, a summer rental base, or a charter season.
  2. Map the site: depth, bottom, current and boat traffic where the dock will sit.
  3. List the loads: people at peak, craft weights, and any gear or vehicles on the dock.
  4. Get maker documents: rated loads, design conditions, inspection steps and warranty terms.
  5. Clear it with the authority and the insurer before you order, not after.
  6. Plan staffing: who launches, inspects, supervises and recovers the dock each day.

Marina, rental and charter questions

Can inflatable docks replace marina docks?

Not for permanent slips. They suit temporary and seasonal jobs; permanent marina docks are rigid engineered systems.

Can a rental business use consumer docks?

Check the warranty for commercial use, your insurer and local rules first. Consumer warranties can be shorter for commercial use, or exclude it.

Can passengers board a tour boat from an inflatable dock?

Only with equipment and approval that meet the marine authority’s rules. We found no consumer dock rated for passenger landing.

What does a commercial floating dock cost?

Professional and yacht docks are mostly priced by quote. Dealer prices we found include about $2,295 for a Jobe Infinity Dock and about $2,665 for a Yachtbeach single jet ski dock.
