Boarding a tender from an inflatable dock

Boarding Platform for Boats: Docks for Vessel Access

Everyone has watched it happen: a swimmer at the stern ladder, one hand on the rail, trying to haul up while the boat rolls in someone’s wake. A floating dock beside the boat takes that struggle away. Swimmers pull themselves onto a wide, low deck, catch their breath, and step aboard. Used this way, an inflatable dock becomes a boarding platform for boats, and a landing for tenders and dinghies too.

In short: for boarding at anchor, pick a narrow, firm inflatable dock that the maker sells for use beside boats, attach it the way its manual says, and shut the engine and generator down while anyone is on it. Bumpers and a ladder make the step easier. Boarding paying passengers is a different, regulated job: no consumer dock is rated for it.

A boarding platform for boats at anchor

For most boat owners, boarding means getting swimmers back aboard and helping guests on and off at anchor. A dock about 10 ft long works for this. Island Hopper sells its 10 x 6 ft Yacht Dock for boats, sailboats and pontoons, and says the 6 ft width makes it easy to put out from the back of a boat; rubber corner bumpers protect the hull. Its 10 x 3 ft Mini Mate is sold to sit beside a boat, including in a marina slip.

On yachts, the boarding platform is often a stern dock or swim platform extension. FunAir lists a Swim Platform Extension, Jobe’s Infinity modules take ladder connectors, and Yachtbeach platforms run up to 8.20 m. These come from dealers or by quote; see yacht docks.

How docks attach to a boat

Makers don’t agree on this, so read the manual for your dock. Island Hopper markets docks to sit beside a boat. RAVE’s manual for its Aqua Dock warns that tethering it to boats, docks or other hard objects increases the chance of injury, and says to keep it away from engines and propellers. Yacht docks such as NautiBuoy’s use their own linking systems and ballast bags, designed for the stern.

  • Use the D-rings or anchor points provided, not handles, for lines.
  • Leave slack for waves and swing, and check lines for chafe where they cross a gunwale.
  • Fenders or bumpers between dock and hull keep both from rubbing.
  • Anchor the boat properly first. BoatUS advises a scope of about 7:1, 5:1 for a small boat in good weather, and never anchoring a small boat by the stern.

Engines off: carbon monoxide at the stern

Boarding happens at the stern, which is where exhaust collects. The U.S. Coast Guard warns never to sit or hang on the back deck or swim platform while engines are running. The CDC says carbon monoxide can build up under and around the stern and advises docking, beaching or anchoring at least 20 ft from boats running an engine or generator. Shut down before anyone climbs onto the dock, and keep it clear of a neighbor’s running generator too.

Tender and dinghy landings

A dock at the yacht gives the tender a soft place to land. FunAir says its Toy Island holds up to 4 jet skis or dinghies; FreeStyle lists tenders among the craft its custom docks hold. Load luggage and gear one piece at a time, keep the tender’s engine off while people step across, and ask the maker what tender weight the dock is rated for.

Passenger boarding needs certification

Boarding the public, on water taxis, tour boats or at events, is regulated. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, for example, requires pontoons used as temporary passenger landing platforms to be certified by a classification society. We found no consumer inflatable dock rated for passenger landing and no published crowd-load ratings for inflatable landing stages. A tour or charter operator should talk to the local marine authority and an insurer before using any dock for passengers; see marinas, rentals and charter.

A boarding checklist for the day

  1. Before launch: anchor the boat, shut down engines and the generator, and agree who handles the dock.
  2. Launch: inflate to the maker’s pressure, attach lines to the D-rings, and lower the dock rather than dropping it.
  3. Set up: fenders between dock and hull, ladder in place, lines with slack for swell.
  4. While in use: one adult watching swimmers, life jackets for kids, and nobody swimming under the dock.
  5. Pack up: rinse with fresh water, dry it, and stow it rolled loosely, as maker manuals such as RAVE’s describe.

Boarding questions

What is the best boarding platform for a boat?

One the maker sells for use beside boats, narrow enough to handle from the stern, with corner bumpers and a stated load rating. Island Hopper’s 10 x 6 ft Yacht Dock is one example; yachts often use custom stern docks.

Can I leave the dock tied to the boat while underway?

No. Bring it aboard or leave it anchored before the boat moves; the docks we checked are presented for use at anchor or at a dock.

How do kids get from the dock onto the boat?

With a ladder, an adult on deck and a life jacket that fits. The Coast Guard notes that adult life jacket sizes may not work for children.

Can I run the generator while people are on the dock?

The CDC advises staying at least 20 ft from boats running a generator or engine, because carbon monoxide collects near the stern. Turn it off.
