The first warm Saturday at the lake house always starts the same way. Coffee on the porch, a look at the water, and then the question someone asks every year: “Is the dock going in today?” With floating docks for ponds and lakes the answer is yes, before lunch. Two people carry a rolled-up bag down to the shore, a pump runs for a few minutes, the anchors go down, and by the afternoon the kids are cannonballing off a 10 x 10 ft deck while a neighbor paddles over to see what all the noise is about.
In short: for a cabin, a pond or a lake you visit in summer, an inflatable drop-stitch dock of about 8 x 8 to 10 x 10 ft is the usual choice: it weighs about 35 to 75 lb, packs into a bag and goes out each season. For a dock that stays in for years and takes boats every day, rigid polyethylene or foam-filled sections weigh and cost more. Check the maker’s minimum water depth (often 4 ft), its anchor weight, and what its capacity figure actually means before you buy.
Floating docks for ponds and lakes: which kind fits your water
Most people looking for a floating dock for a lake fall into one of five setups. Pick yours first; sizes and anchors follow from it.
- Cabin and vacation-home dock. Set up and taken down by one or two people. Inflatables fit: WOW’s 8 x 8 ft Vacation Station weighs about 53 lb and RAVE’s 10 x 10 ft Aqua Dock about 68 lb, as their sellers list them. If the house sits empty for weeks, decide who checks anchors and pressure, or bring the dock in between visits.
- Swim dock anchored offshore. A deck out in deeper water to climb on, sunbathe and jump from. Makers set the depth: RAVE asks for at least 4 ft under the Aqua Dock; Aquaglide asks for 4 ft and at least 10 ft from shore for its Docking Station.
- Pond dock. Farm and backyard ponds are often shallow and soft at the edge. Measure where the dock will sit. Under the maker’s minimum depth, a small dock tied near shore works as a fishing or launch spot, but it is the wrong place for a swim dock.
- Portable dock that moves with you. Rented cabins, camping trips, a different lake each summer. The Island Hopper Yacht Dock 10 x 6 rolls to about 40 x 16 x 14 in, the maker says, small enough for a car trunk or a boat locker. See portable docks for the full list.
- Stay-in shoreline dock. A walkway from the bank that boats tie to all season. This is rigid territory: Connect-A-Dock, EZ Dock, Wave Armor and Candock sections, or foam floats under a wood frame. Those are not inflatable; we label them as rigid wherever they appear.
Lake dock sizes and capacities, as makers state them
Consumer inflatable docks run from about 6 x 5 ft to 15 ft long, 6 to 8 in thick, inflated to about 5 to 12 psi. Here is what the main makers and sellers publish for lake use.
| Dock | Size | Stated capacity | Weight | Pressure | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWSUM Inflatable Floating Dock | 6 x 5 ft to 15 x 6 ft, 6 in | 455 lb to 2,000 lb by size (seller) | 18.8 lb (6 x 5) | 5 to 8 psi | Seven sizes; soft ladder included |
| BOTE Inflatable Dock 7 Classic | 7 x 7 ft x 8 in | 1,050 lb | 35 lb | 6 to 8 psi | Thickest consumer deck we found |
| WOW Vacation Station 8 x 8 | 8 x 8 ft x 6 in | 1,200 lb | 53 lb | Not listed | Retailer listing |
| Island Hopper Yacht Dock 10 x 6 | 10 x 6 ft x 6 in | 1,500 lb load rating | 53 lb | 8 to 15 psi | Heat-welded, corner bumpers |
| Solstice 10 x 10 | 10 x 10 ft x 6 in | 1,650 lb (Overton’s); 1,323 lb (Amazon listing) | 70 to 73 lb | 7 to 12 psi | Six stainless D-rings, H3 valve |
| RAVE Aqua Dock 10 | 10 x 10 ft x 6 in | 1,800 lb, 10 adults or 14 children | 68 lb | 5 psi | 4 ft minimum depth |
| BOTE Inflatable Dock 10 Classic | 10 x 10 ft x 8 in | 2,100 lb (BOTE); 1,500 lb at some retailers | About 83 lb | 8 to 10 psi | Ask BOTE which figure applies |
| Aquaglide Docking Station | 14 ft 9 in x 10 ft 5 in x 6 in | 600 lb (3 adults + 3 children) | Not listed | Not listed | At least 1,100 lb of anchor weight |
For layouts, most lake docks are a single square or rectangle. A few link up: BOTE says you can lash several of its docks together, while RAVE says the Aqua Dock is a stand-alone product and Aquaglide says not to combine its products with other brands. Straight, L, T and U layouts are a rigid-dock idea; our post on floating dock designs and layouts shows how they work.
How lake docks are built: materials, seams and valves
Drop-stitch core. An inflatable dock is two layers of woven fabric joined by thousands of threads, coated airtight (usually with PVC or TPU) and pumped up until the threads pull tight and the panel goes flat and firm. That is why a 6 in dock feels like a floor and not like a pool float. Thickness matters for stiffness: most lake docks are 6 in (15 cm), BOTE’s are 8 in, and yacht docks from Jobe and Yachtbeach are 20 cm. Our deep dive is drop-stitch docks explained.
Skin and deck. Consumer lake docks are PVC. Island Hopper lists a reinforced 1000-denier outer fabric; Aquaglide lists 0.80 mm, 28 oz Duratex on the Docking Station. Hypalon, a tougher coated fabric, shows up mainly on superyacht gear (Henshaw’s jet ski dock uses a Hypalon tube base) rather than lake docks. The top is usually EVA foam, which is softer underfoot and less slippery than bare PVC.
Seams and valves. Island Hopper says its docks are heat-welded with “no glued edges or corners”; Aquaglide lists welded drop-stitch with 3-layer seams. Welded seams are worth asking about, since a seam failure is the repair makers ask you to send back. Most docks use a high-pressure valve such as the H3 valve on Solstice docks, which fits common paddle-board pumps.
Rigid alternatives (not inflatable). Connect-A-Dock sections are polyethylene air-chamber floats, 3.75 x 5 ft, each rated up to 690 lb. EZ Dock sections are rotomolded polyethylene with hollow chambers; its 60 x 60 in section is rated 1,500 lb. Wave Armor sections are polyethylene with a foam-filled float, and the maker says a puncture should not cause sinking. Taylor Made sells foam-filled floats rated about 335 to 1,200 lb of flotation by size to put under your own frame. Compare both worlds in inflatable vs rigid floating docks.
What the capacity numbers mean
Look at the Aquaglide line in the table: the biggest dock has the smallest number. Aquaglide states a people limit (3 adults and 3 children), while most others state a static load rating in pounds. RAVE gives both: 1,800 lb, or 10 adults or 14 children. BOTE’s 10 ft dock is listed at 2,100 lb on BOTE’s site and 1,500 lb at some retailers. So compare like with like, use the people count when the maker gives one, and ask the maker how many people a pound figure allows. We never work out a safe load from a dock’s size; neither should a seller. More in inflatable dock capacity explained.
Anchoring and setup basics
- Measure the depth. At least what the maker asks (4 ft for RAVE and Aquaglide), and check the bottom for rocks and stumps.
- Plan the anchor weight. RAVE’s FAQ suggests 150 to 200 lb of anchor weight for its products, depending on the lake and bottom. Aquaglide asks for at least 1,100 lb on the Docking Station and does not include anchors, bridle, lines or pump.
- Inflate on a clean surface. RAVE says to inflate on flat ground free of sharp objects, carry the dock with two or more people and never drag it. Don’t go over the maker’s pressure (RAVE: 5 psi).
- Use every anchor point. RAVE has two, one at each end underneath, so the wind can’t swing the dock. Aquaglide’s manuals say to set anchors and mooring lines before inflating and never to tie the product to a dock.
- Check it after the first hour and after wind. A dock that has walked has the wrong anchors.
Rigid docks anchor differently: EZ Dock lists pipes, deadweight anchors, piling brackets and stiff arms, and Connect-A-Dock kits use pole connectors with Schedule 40 pipe you buy separately. Full steps are in how to anchor a floating dock and floating dock installation. No consumer dock maker we checked publishes a wind or wave limit, so bring the dock in when weather builds.
Permits. Rules depend on the state and the lake. Minnesota’s 2026 boating guide says swimming rafts not attached to shore cannot stay out between sunset and sunrise without a county sheriff’s permit and need lights or reflectors. Illinois’ statewide permit for small docks requires them to be securely anchored so they can’t break loose in high water or wind. Structures in navigable waters can also need a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit. Ask your state agency or lake association first.
Portable docks: advantages and trade-offs
| Inflatable lake dock | Rigid floating dock | |
|---|---|---|
| Carry and store | About 35 to 83 lb, rolls into a bag | One Connect-A-Dock section is about 110 lb; a Wave Armor 60 x 120 in section 380 lb |
| Setup | Minutes with a pump, plus anchors | Hand tools, pipes or deadweights; EZ Dock says most docks go in within a day with a helper |
| Season | In and out each summer; store over winter | Stays in; pull before shifting ice |
| Ties to a boat | Not a mooring; some makers forbid tying to hard objects | Cleats and pole anchoring |
| Price seen | About $170 to $2,640 | About $4,878 for a 20 ft kit |
The short version: inflatable wins on carrying, storing and moving to a new spot; rigid wins on daily boat traffic and years in the water. Our floating dock kits vs inflatable docks comparison goes through it line by line.
The fun part
Picture a July evening at a small lake. The dock is anchored 30 yards out, and it has become the place everyone swims to. Two teenagers race there and back, a toddler in a life jacket sits on the edge with a grandparent, kicking at the water, and someone has towed out a cooler on a paddle board. Later the adults take over: towels on the warm EVA deck, feet in the water, the sun dropping behind the trees. That is the real reason people buy a lake dock. It turns open water into a destination, a stage for cannonballs, and a quiet spot to start a kayak paddle without wading through mud. For lounging and swimming ideas, see swimming and lounging docks.
Safety on and around a lake dock
- Supervision and depth. RAVE’s manual calls for constant adult supervision of children, says never to dive head first, never to swim under the dock, and to know where the anchor lines are. It also says not to use the dock after sunset or before dawn, or in high wind, waves, currents, storms or lightning.
- Life jackets. RAVE asks users to wear a USCG-approved Type III / Level 70N life jacket. The Coast Guard notes that most boating drownings happen on nice days and that adult life jackets may not fit children.
- The boats you tie up. Kayaks, canoes and small boats launched from your dock are vessels with their own rules. Federal law requires a Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket for each person aboard, and children under 13 must wear one while the boat is underway; state rules can add more. Our Coast Guard requirements page lists the basics.
- Power near the water. If your dock or a neighbor’s has shore power, electric shock drowning is a real risk. The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office advises never swimming within 100 yards of a dock using electrical power or a freshwater marina, using GFCI outlets and ELCI protection, and, if you feel tingling, warning others and heading for shore away from the dock. Read electric shock drowning before you run a cord to the dock.
- Engines off. The CDC advises staying at least 20 ft from boats running an engine or generator because of carbon monoxide.
- Weather and cold. NOAA advises getting away from ponds and lakes when thunder roars, and the National Weather Service says cold shock can be as severe in 50 to 60 °F water as in 35 °F water: early-season swims are colder than they look.

Gear for a lake dock: anchors, lines, ladders, pumps, repair
- Anchors. Sand-bag anchors are kind to the dock: Aquaglide’s Lakefront Anchor Bag set holds about 110 lb of sand and comes with a 20 ft line, float and carabiner ($114.99 at Bart’s, backordered when we looked). Mushroom anchors suit soft, muddy or weedy bottoms.
- Lines. Nylon stretches and absorbs shock; RAVE’s own Anchor Connector Kit adds a 6 ft shock cord “to absorb movement and stress”.
- Ladders. Many inflatables come with a soft ladder (AWSUM) or handles (RAVE has ten). Rigid stainless ladders bolt to a rigid dock or pontoon deck, not to a drop-stitch panel. See dock ladders and accessories.
- Pumps. Most docks ship with a hand pump; an electric pump with a preset pressure saves your arms. Set it to your dock’s pressure, never the pump’s maximum.
- Repair kit. PVC patches and a PVC glue such as HH-66. RAVE asks you to contact them for large holes, tears or seam failures. See inflatable dock repair.

What a lake dock costs
Prices we saw in October 2026: the AWSUM 6 x 5 ft from about $170 on Amazon; a Solstice 10 x 10 at about $703 and the Island Hopper 10 x 6 at $749 on Amazon; WOW’s 8 x 8 at $719.99 at Overton’s; the RAVE Aqua Dock 10 at $799.99; BOTE’s docks at $1,049 (7 ft) and $1,549 (10 ft) direct; and the Aquaglide Docking Station at $2,639.99 at Bart’s. Rigid docks cost more: Connect-A-Dock’s 20 ft kit was $4,878 on Amazon without anchoring pipe, Wave Armor lists a 60 x 120 in section at $2,295, and HomeAdvisor puts floating docks at $15 to $35 per square foot with materials and labor. Anchors, lines and an electric pump are usually extra; the gear cards above ran about $39 to $130 each. Full breakdown: what a floating dock costs.
Care through the season and over winter
RAVE’s manual covers the basics most makers share: clean with mild soap, no solvents or power washers; let each side dry; roll loosely; store somewhere cool, dry, shaded and rodent-proof, off bare concrete. It also warns that muskrats can chew a soft dock, and says keeping it at full pressure discourages them, or take it out at night. Aquaglide recommends a UV protectant on exposed surfaces. Before ice forms, take the dock out: Connect-A-Dock advises removing even rigid docks where ice shifts, and Candock says most ice damage comes from ice moving during the spring thaw. Step-by-step: how to store an inflatable dock.

Lake and pond dock questions
How deep does the water need to be for a floating dock?
As deep as the maker says. RAVE and Aquaglide both ask for at least 4 ft under their docks. Rigid docks near shore can sit in shallower water, depending on the maker.
What size floating dock do I need for my family?
Count people, then compare with the maker’s people rating, not the square footage. RAVE rates its 10 x 10 ft dock for 10 adults or 14 children; Aquaglide rates its larger Docking Station for 3 adults and 3 children.
Are floating docks good for ponds?
Yes, if the pond is deep enough where the dock sits and you can anchor it on the bottom. A shallow, muddy edge suits a small fishing or launch spot better than a swim dock. Measure before you buy.
How much anchor weight does a lake dock need?
Whatever your dock’s maker states. RAVE suggests 150 to 200 lb depending on the lake and bottom; Aquaglide asks for at least 1,100 lb for its Docking Station. Most docks don’t include anchors.
Can I tie my boat to an inflatable lake dock?
Only if the maker allows it. RAVE says not to connect the Aqua Dock directly to docks, piers or other hard objects and to keep it away from engines and propellers. For daily boat tie-ups, a rigid dock with cleats is the usual answer; see floating boat docks.
Are portable docks as stable as fixed docks?
They move with the water, which is the point. A well-inflated 6 to 8 in drop-stitch dock feels firm, but it will rock in waves more than a heavy rigid section. Thicker decks and correct pressure help.
Can I leave an inflatable dock out all winter?
Take it out before ice forms. Rinse it, let it dry, roll it loosely and store it somewhere cool, shaded and safe from rodents, as RAVE’s manual describes.
