It starts with one section off the shore so the kids can jump in. The next summer there is a boat, so the dock grows into an L. Then a neighbor’s jet ski needs a spot and it becomes a T, with a swim deck at the end where everyone ends up at sunset. A modular floating dock is built for exactly that kind of family history: sections that join, come apart and rearrange as the waterfront changes.

Two people in life jackets clipping two inflatable dock sections together

In short: modular floating docks are sold as sections or floating dock kits that link with connectors. Most long-term systems are rigid polyethylene (EZ Dock, Connect-A-Dock, Candock) and stay in for the season; inflatable modular docks (Jobe Infinity, NautiBuoy, Yachtbeach, Northern Diver FloatDeck) link with straps, D-rings or the maker’s own connectors and pack into bags. Plan the layout around what ties up, keep to one maker’s system, and check what anchoring the kit includes.

EZ Dock, Connect-A-Dock and Candock are rigid floating docks, not inflatables. Rigid kits suit a home shoreline where the dock stays for years; inflatable modules suit yachts, travel, rentals and seasonal setups. Some single inflatable docks don’t link at all: RAVE’s Aqua Dock does not connect to other RAVE products, and Aquaglide forbids combining its products with other brands’ products. Mixing makers’ sections can void warranties, so stay inside one system.

Modular dock layouts: straight, L, T and U

  • Straight: a single run out from shore. The simplest walkway to deeper water, with a swim spot at the end or a boat tied alongside. Connect-A-Dock’s 20 ft kit is four 3.75 x 5 ft sections in a line.
  • L shape: a run plus a cross piece at the end. Shelters a boat on one side and leaves a wider platform to stand on.
  • T shape: a cross piece across the end. Two sides to tie up, for two boats or a boat and a jet ski. Connect-A-Dock lists T, F and L shapes and a swim platform, and notes some layouts need extra floats or connectors.
  • U shape: two arms around a slip. Protects a boat or PWC on three sides; in inflatables, the Jobe Infinity PWC Dock is a U.

Before you order, sketch the shoreline with depths at the end of each arm, where boats approach, and where the dock will be anchored. Connect-A-Dock recommends a minimum installation width of 45 in and working with a dealer on anchoring. More shapes and drawings: floating dock designs and layouts.

Construction and materials

  • Rotomolded polyethylene (LLDPE, HDPE). Hollow sections or cubes that float on trapped air. EZ Dock uses 100% virgin LLDPE with UV resistance; Connect-A-Dock says its gray polyethylene resists oil, gas and saltwater; Candock cubes are HDPE with an anti-skid surface.
  • Drop-stitch PVC. Inflatable modules 8 cm (FloatDeck) to 20 cm (Jobe, Yachtbeach) thick, with EVA or teak-look decks. FloatDeck runs at up to 0.7 bar (10 psi). See drop-stitch docks explained.
  • Build-your-own floats. Foam-filled floats such as Taylor Made’s (polyethylene shell, EPS foam core) go under a deck frame you build. Taylor Made says its floats are not designed to attach to each other. See building a floating dock vs buying inflatable.

Stated capacities and what they mean

Rigid makers state capacity per section (690 lb for a Connect-A-Dock 1000 Series section, 1,500 lb for an EZ Dock 60 x 60) or buoyancy per cube (150 lb for Candock). Those are flotation figures for that piece, not a promise about a crowd standing on one corner or a boat bumping the end. The freeboard matters too: an 8 in deck (Connect-A-Dock 1000) suits swimmers and kayaks, a 17 in deck (2000 Series) suits boarding a boat. Inflatable makers state user weight (Jobe) or the craft a bay is built for (Yachtbeach). Ask the maker for the figure that matches your use. More in inflatable dock capacity explained.

Setup and anchoring

  1. Measure depth along the planned line, and how much the water level changes over the season.
  2. Assemble on the water. Connect-A-Dock says one person can install its sections, though two or more are recommended, using simple hand tools.
  3. Anchor. Pole anchoring with pipe (Connect-A-Dock’s kit leaves out the Schedule 40 pipe; EZ Dock sections have an integrated pipe bracket), or anchors and cables. In saltwater, Connect-A-Dock recommends stainless or other non-corrosive anchoring.
  4. Connect to shore with a gangway on a hinge (the Connect-A-Dock kit includes one) so the dock can rise and fall.
  5. Check the rules before you build: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requires permits for structures in navigable waters, and states and lake associations add their own.

Which system fits your waterfront

  • Lake house, dock stays in May to October: a rigid kit. Pick the freeboard for the job: about 8 in (Connect-A-Dock 1000) for swimming and paddling, about 17 in (Connect-A-Dock 2000) for boarding a boat.
  • Reservoir with big level swings: any floating system, on pole anchors or cables that allow for the range, with a hinged gangway to shore.
  • Rental cabin or second home: inflatable modules that come out at the end of each stay, or a small rigid kit if someone can check the anchoring.
  • Yacht or day boat: inflatable modules from one system (Jobe, Yachtbeach, NautiBuoy). See yacht docks.
  • Work, diving or events: FloatDeck is sold for dive preparation, boat cleaning and as a temporary pontoon, in lengths that link. For public events, get local approval first.

Planning a modular dock in five steps

  1. Measure: depth along the planned line and the seasonal change in water level.
  2. Choose the shape: straight, L, T or U, from what ties up and where people stand.
  3. Pick one system: sections, connectors and anchoring from the same maker.
  4. Plan anchoring: poles, pipe, anchors or cables, and who installs them.
  5. Check rules: permits and lake association approval before the order.

The fun part: the dock that grows with the family

The best thing about a modular dock is that it never has to be finished. One summer the end section is the cannonball spot. The next, a cross piece makes a sun deck where the adults sit with coffee while the kids fish off the side. When the grandchildren arrive with paddle boards, a low section at water level becomes the launch. On a yacht, the same idea works in a cove: platform first, then a jet ski bay, then a Seabob cradle, clipped together in the afternoon and packed away before dinner. InflatablePlatforms covers the lounging side in its guide to modular platforms.

Safety on a modular dock

  • Electric shock drowning. Docks that stay in often get lights, outlets or a lift. Tennessee’s State Fire Marshal advises hiring a licensed electrician for dock wiring, inspecting dock electrical systems at least yearly, using a GFCI outlet and an ELCI when charging from the house, never swimming within 100 yards of any dock using electrical power, and shutting down all shore power to the boat and dock before swimming.
  • If a swimmer feels tingling, the same guidance says not to swim toward the dock, but to back out and head for shore away from it. Rescuers should fight the instinct to jump in, call 911, and turn off the power first.
  • Life jackets. The Coast Guard requires an approved wearable life jacket for each person on a boat; in 2024, 87% of boating drowning victims were not wearing one. Keep a throwable ring on the dock.
  • Depth. Check depth at the end of every arm before anyone dives; the shallow side of an L or T is easy to forget.
  • Supervision. The CDC says children need close and constant supervision around water and that adults supervising should not drink alcohol.

Care, winter and ice

Connect-A-Dock says freezing won’t harm its dock but advises removing it for winter because of shifting ice; Candock says its cubes are not guaranteed against ice damage and the main risk is ice moving in the spring thaw. Clean polyethylene with a hose and broom, check connectors and anchoring each spring, and replace worn pins before they fail. Deflate, dry and bag inflatable modules for winter; see how to store an inflatable dock.

Modular dock questions

What is a floating dock kit?

A box of sections and hardware you assemble into a dock. Connect-A-Dock’s 20 ft kit has four 3.75 x 5 ft sections, connectors, cleats and a gangway hinge, and installs with hand tools.

Can I connect inflatable docks together?

Only those built for it. Jobe Infinity, Yachtbeach, NautiBuoy and FloatDeck link by design. RAVE’s Aqua Dock does not connect to other RAVE products, and Aquaglide forbids combining its products with other brands’. Don’t lash together docks the maker didn’t design to link.

How much does a modular floating dock cost?

A 20 ft rigid kit was about $4,878 on Amazon in October 2026, before anchoring pipe and installation. A single Jobe Infinity Dock module was about $2,295 at a dealer. Larger systems are quoted.

What is the best layout for a floating dock?

The one that matches what ties up. Straight for a walkway and swim spot, L for one boat and a deck, T for two craft, U to shelter a boat or PWC on three sides.

Is a modular dock better than a fixed dock?

Where water levels change, a floating modular dock rises and falls with the water, which a fixed dock can’t. Where ice is heavy, plan to remove it each winter.

Do I need a permit for a modular dock?

Often, yes, for a dock that stays in. The Army Corps of Engineers regulates structures in navigable waters, and states, towns and lake associations add rules. Ask before you order.

Can I put power on a modular dock?

Only with a licensed electrician and wiring that meets code. Fire officials advise yearly inspections and no swimming near any dock using electrical power because of electric shock drowning.
