Floating Boat Docks: Inflatable and Rigid Docks for Boats

Saturday at the cove. The pontoon is anchored, the cooler is open, and everyone wants to swim, but climbing back up the boarding ladder one at a time turns into a queue. A few boats over, a family has rolled a 10 ft inflatable dock off the stern, and their kids are stepping on and off it like a little pier, sitting on the edge between swims. Back at the marina, the same boat ties up to rigid floating sections that rise and fall with the water. Both are floating boat docks: a steady place to tie up, board, and get in and out of the water.

Man tying a motorboat's bow line to an inflatable boat dock on a lake

In short: at home, a boat dock is usually rigid (polyethylene sections or foam-filled floats) because it stays in all season and takes lines and bumps every day. On the water, an inflatable boat dock about 10 ft long and 3 to 10 ft wide packs into the boat and gives a step-off deck at anchor; makers rate them 1,000 to 2,000 lb. Use the maker’s figure, keep engines off when people are on or near the dock, and tie it the way the manual says.

Floating boat docks by boat type

Pontoon boats

Pontoons have wide, flat decks and gates on the side and stern, so an inflatable dock off the stern or side gate makes a patio at anchor. Island Hopper sells its 10 x 6 ft Yacht Dock for boats, sailboats and pontoons and says the 6 ft beam lets it deploy off smaller vessels “where a 10-foot platform would be impossible”. Check how your gate and ladder line up with the dock before the trip.

Fishing boats and bass boats

Small fishing boats need a steady place to tie up and load gear every morning. At a lake house that is a rigid dock: polyethylene sections, or foam-filled floats under a wood frame. Out on the water, an inflatable dock gives anglers room to stand and stretch, but it is a deck, not a cleat-and-piling pier.

RIBs, tenders and dinghies

A tender running guests ashore needs a quick, soft-sided landing. Narrow docks suit this: Island Hopper sells its 10 x 3 ft Mini Mate to sit beside a boat, including in a marina slip. On larger yachts, tender and toy docks are custom builds; see yacht docks. For a dinghy, canoe or kayak, the dock mostly helps people get aboard without tipping it; our kayak launch docks page covers paddle craft.

Layouts. Inflatable boat docks are single rectangles that sit beside or behind the boat. Rigid sections build layouts: EZ Dock describes a straight dock as the simplest and usually least expensive, an L as room for at least two watercraft, a T for two boats or one big spot plus canoes, and a U for a boat between two arms. Connect-A-Dock’s 20 ft straight kit is four 3.75 x 5 ft sections with cleats and a gangway hinge. See floating dock designs and layouts and modular docks.

How boat docks are built: materials and details

Inflatable boat docks are drop-stitch panels: two fabric layers held flat by thousands of threads, coated airtight (usually PVC or TPU) and pumped firm. Island Hopper lists heat-welded PVC with a reinforced 1000-denier outer fabric, “no glued edges or corners”, an EVA foam top, stainless side D-rings, rubber bumpers on all four corners for the hull and dock posts, and 8 to 15 psi. Thickness is 6 in on most boat docks and 20 cm on yacht docks from Jobe and Yachtbeach. Hypalon, a tougher coated fabric, appears on superyacht gear such as Henshaw’s jet ski dock base. Deep dive: drop-stitch docks explained.

Rigid floating docks (not inflatable) float on air chambers or foam. Connect-A-Dock’s 1000 Series sits about 8 in above the water and its 2000 Series about 17 in (rated 2,500 lb); EZ Dock lists about 13 in of freeboard. Wave Armor uses a foam-filled float and says a puncture should not cause sinking. Freeboard matters for boats: a deck that sits too low or too high for your gunwale makes boarding awkward, so compare it with your boat. Our inflatable vs rigid floating docks comparison goes further.

What the capacity figures mean

Island Hopper’s 1,000 / 1,500 / 2,000 lb figures are load ratings, not people counts, and rigid figures such as Connect-A-Dock’s 690 lb are per section. Neither is a rating for a boat leaning its weight on the dock. Your boat has its own limit too: BoatUS explains that powered boats under 20 ft built after November 1, 1972 must carry a capacity plate with the maximum persons and weight, and that those limits apply in good to moderate weather. Ask the dock maker how many people a load rating allows, and never work it out from the size. More in inflatable dock capacity explained.

Advantages of an inflatable boat dock: it goes where the boat goes, it is soft against hulls, and it packs away (Island Hopper’s 10 x 6 rolls to about 40 x 16 x 14 in, the maker says). Trade-offs: it is not a mooring, some makers advise against tying to boats at all, and few publish wind or wave limits. A rigid dock wins on daily tie-ups and years in the water, and costs and weighs much more. Compare kits in floating dock kits vs inflatable docks.

Anchoring and tying up

  1. Anchor the boat well first. BoatUS advises a scope of about 7:1 (5:1 for a small boat with a light anchor in good weather) and never anchoring a small boat by the stern.
  2. Follow the dock’s manual on tying off. Island Hopper sells docks to sit beside a boat; RAVE’s manual for its swim dock says tethering to boats, docks or hard objects increases the chance of injury and to keep it away from engines and propellers. Where the maker says to, anchor the dock on its own.
  3. Fenders between hull and dock. Taylor Made sizes its Hull Gard fenders by boat length (4-1/2 x 16 in for 10 to 15 ft boats), inflated to about 2 psi, and calls its chart a minimum.
  4. Nylon lines. Double-braid nylon stretches and absorbs shock loads.
  5. Rigid docks at home anchor with pipes, deadweights, piling brackets or stiff arms (EZ Dock); Connect-A-Dock kits use pole connectors with Schedule 40 pipe bought separately.

The fun part

An inflatable boat dock turns the back of the boat into a front porch on the water. Picture mid-afternoon in a quiet cove: the engine is off, the dock floats behind the stern, and three generations are spread across it. Grandpa is in a folding chair at the edge with a fishing rod, two kids take turns jumping off the far corner, and a teenager lies on the warm EVA top reading. When someone gets cold, they climb out onto the deck instead of hanging off a ladder. Lunch gets passed down from the swim platform. Nobody wants to pull anchor. For more ways people use their docks, see boarding and vessel access.

Boat dock safety: Coast Guard basics, power and engines

  • Life jackets aboard. The Coast Guard requires a USCG-approved wearable life jacket for each person aboard, readily accessible, and throwable devices must be immediately available. Federal law requires children under 13 to wear one while the boat is underway; state rules may add more. Basics are on our Coast Guard requirements page.
  • Engines off. The Coast Guard warns never to sit, teak surf or hang on the back deck or swim platform while engines are running, and the CDC advises staying at least 20 ft from boats running an engine or generator because carbon monoxide gathers near the stern.
  • Marinas and powered docks. Electric shock drowning happens when swimmers enter water electrified by a boat or dock. The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office advises never swimming within 100 yards of a freshwater marina, boatyard or dock using electrical power, having an ABYC electrician fit ELCI protection on the boat, and, if you feel tingling, warning others and heading for shore away from the dock. Read electric shock drowning.
  • Depth and supervision. Check the depth where people jump, never dive head first, and keep constant adult supervision of children, as RAVE’s dock manual says.

Boat dock gear: lines, ladders, anchors, pumps, repair

  • Dock lines and fenders for every tie-up; size fenders to the boat.
  • Ladders. Stainless and aluminum dock ladders bolt or clamp to a rigid dock or pontoon deck; they are not made to attach to a drop-stitch dock. Inflatables use handles or soft ladders. See dock ladders and accessories.
  • Anchors and line for an inflatable dock you set on its own.
  • Pump and repair kit. Island Hopper sells a PSI 15 Auto-Set electric inflator separately ($129); a PVC patch kit with HH-66 cement covers small holes. See inflatable dock repair.

What a floating boat dock costs

In October 2026: the Island Hopper Yacht Dock 10 x 6 was $749 on Amazon. For rigid docks, Connect-A-Dock’s 20 ft straight kit was $4,878 on Amazon with anchoring pipe not included; Wave Armor lists dock sections from $950 (30 x 60 in) to $2,950 (80 x 120 in); EZ Dock prices by dealer quote; and HomeAdvisor puts floating docks at $15 to $35 per square foot with materials and labor. Building your own frame? Dock floats ran about $129 (Dock Edge+, 2 x 4 ft) to $227 (Taylor Made 24 x 48 x 16 in) each. More: what a floating dock costs and building a floating dock vs buying an inflatable.

Care

Inflatable: rinse with mild soap (no solvents or power washer), dry both sides, roll loosely, and store cool, shaded and away from rodents, as RAVE’s manual describes; Aquaglide recommends a UV protectant. Rigid: Connect-A-Dock suggests a hose and broom, and both Connect-A-Dock and Candock warn about moving ice, so pull sections where ice shifts. See how to store an inflatable dock.

Five checks before you buy a floating boat dock

  1. Where it lives: on your shoreline all season (rigid usually fits) or on the boat (inflatable usually fits).
  2. What ties up: boat length, gunwale height and weight, and whether a jet ski joins it (see jet ski docks).
  3. The rating: a load rating, a people count, or both, as the maker states it.
  4. Anchoring: poles, pipes, anchors or a mooring, and what the kit leaves out.
  5. Rules: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requires permits for structures in navigable waters, and states and lake authorities add their own.

Boat dock questions

Can I tie my boat to an inflatable dock?

Only as the maker allows. Island Hopper sells docks to sit beside a boat; RAVE warns that tethering its dock to boats or hard objects increases injury risk. An inflatable dock is not a mooring for a boat left unattended.

What size inflatable boat dock fits a pontoon?

Island Hopper’s boat docks are all 10 ft long, in 3, 6 and 10 ft widths. Narrower docks are easier to put out from the stern and store aboard; wider ones give more room to sit.

Are inflatable docks for boats strong enough to stand on?

Yes, within the maker’s rating. Drop-stitch docks pumped to their stated pressure (8 to 15 psi for Island Hopper) are firm enough to walk on. Island Hopper rates its docks 1,000 to 2,000 lb.

How high should a boat dock sit above the water?

Close to your boat’s boarding height. Rigid docks differ: Connect-A-Dock’s 1000 Series sits about 8 in up and its 2000 Series about 17 in; EZ Dock lists about 13 in. A 6 in inflatable sits low, which suits swimmers and small craft.

Are floating boat docks expensive?

An inflatable 10 x 6 ft dock was about $749 in October 2026; a 20 ft rigid Connect-A-Dock kit was about $4,878 on Amazon, with anchoring pipe not included.

Is it safe to swim near my boat dock?

Not with engines running, and not near docks or marinas with electrical power. Turn engines off, keep clear of exhaust, and follow the 100-yard advice from the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office near powered docks.

Do I need a permit for a boat dock?

Permanent docks often do. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requires permits for structures in navigable waters, and states and lake authorities add their own rules. Ask before you build.
